Mail Clients

Setting up Email Clients

Each client program has their own setup and I'm not going into detail on how to setup each one. kence.net supports both IMAP and POP mailboxes - use whichever you prefer (if you don't know the difference, you want POP). Below is the basic information you will need to set up your mail client.

IMAP and POP Servers

  • POP3 server: mail.kence.net
  • IMAP server: mail.kence.net

Note: You can use an encrypted connection (IMAPS/POP3S) if you prefer. See the Installing certificates section below on how to install the certificates used.

SMTP Server

You will also need to setup some SMTP server for outgoing mail. Ideally you should use the SMTP server of your ISP. Some ISPs do not allow outgoing email to have an address different from the one that they assign (for example, Verio might not allow you to say your email address is person@kence.net because the domain isn't verio.net). If you are unable to use your ISP's SMTP server you can use the SMTP server at kence.net but your email client must support SMTP authentication (SMTP AUTH).

  • SMTP server: mail.kence.net

Your username/password for the SMTP authentication is the same as the username/password for the IMAP and POP servers.

In Outlook and Outlook Express you can enable SMTP authentication by opening up the properties for your Account (Tools > Accounts > Properties). Select the Servers tab. At the bottom is an option for "My server requires authentication". Select this box and OK out of the Properties dialog.
