Spam Protection

kence.org uses several Real-time Blackhole Lists (RBLs). These lists contain addresses of ISPs that are known to have an open relay mail server which can often be used to send spam. Mail attemps from ISPs who are on any of the RBLs will be denied. Unfortunately some non-spammers may be behind one of the blacklisted ISPs. If you find that someone is unable to email you, or that you are unable to email them send an email to the Postmaster (postmaster [at] kence [dot] org) with the trouble address and I'll look into it.

kence.org also uses SpamAssassin to flag incoming spam to make it easier for you to delete. SpamAssassin will give the email a score based on several rules. The score the email receives will determine what happens to the mail in the system:

  • A score < 8.0 are considered non-spam and appear as usual in your mailbox.
  • A score >= 8.0 and < 9 are marked as spam by prepending SPAM: to the subject and are delivered to your mailbox for you to examine and delete.
  • A score >= 9 and < 11 are marked as spam and are moved to a system-wide SPAM folder for the Postmaster to filter through for false-positives. These emails will never appear in your inbox unless the Postmaster forwards you one that has been incorrectly flagged as spam.
  • A score >= 11.0 are routed directly to /dev/null and never appear in your inbox.

If you have emails that are continually incorrectly flagged as spam (such as from a mailing list, etc) forward the sender's email address to the Postmaster (postmaster [at] kence [dot] org) and he will add it to the whitelist.
